Wordle can sometimes be tricky to solve in six turns, and in order to do so you might need a clue or a useful starting word.

The daily puzzle assists players along the way by providing color-coded hints which tell a user if the letter is in the word (green), if it's in the wrong place (yellow), or if it's not in the word at all (grey).

Even with this, though, it is not always obvious what the word may be and then another, more concrete hint is required. Newsweek has collated a number of such clues that will assist players with solving the puzzle.

The answer to today's Wordle is also provided to those who want to know it.

Created by Josh Wardle, Wordle has taken the world by storm with its daily word puzzles. The brain-teaser now has 45 million active users after originally starting with just 90 players, a truly meteoric rise.

Wordle has become so successful and so beloved that it has also inspired a number of other games with similar daily puzzles, such as the math-based puzzle Nerdle and the music-based Heardle.

Wordle can sometimes be a game of chance, as it's not obvious what the day's word could be until you know at least a few of the letters.

The most useful letters to figure out first are the vowels, especially how many of them are in the word of the day. With that in mind, the best starting words for Wordle are those with a lot of vowels, such as "Adieu" or "Ouija."

While the starting word is useful to know, sometimes you may also need a hint or two, and Newsweek has five, each more revealing than the last.

As always, the answer to Wordle #268 will be provided at the end of this article, simply scroll to the bottom to see it.

The answer to today's Wordle is "Smelt."

While Daylight Saving Time began in the U.S. on Sunday, March 13, it's currently unclear if this impacts the time that Wordle is reset. Wordle typically refreshes every day at 7 p.m. ET with a new daily puzzle.

Those who are in need of something to fill their time while they wait for Wordle to refresh can try out a number of alternative word games.
