Dayton, Ohio—The Great Lakes Loons held on for a pair of one-run victories over the Dayton Dragons on Thursday night, sweeping a doubleheader by winning the first game 6-5 and taking the second contest, 4-3. Both games ended with Dayton’s potential tying run in scoring position.

A crowd of 8,712 was in attendance at Day Air Ballpark in the heart of the Water Street District.

The Dragons fell to 36-17 on the season. They are in first place, six and one-half games ahead of Great Lakes in the Midwest League East Division with 13 games to play in the first half season. The Dragons “magic number” to eliminate Great Lakes from the first half playoff race remained at seven (any combination of Dayton wins and Great Lakes losses totaling seven over the final 13 games would eliminate Great Lakes). The Dragons “magic number” to eliminate third place Lake County is six.

Doubleheader: In the first game, the Dragons took a 4-3 lead to the seventh inning (final scheduled inning), only to see Great Lakes tie the game and send it to extra innings. The Loons then scored two in the top of the eighth to take a 6-4 lead. The Dragons got a one-out, run-scoring double from Garrett Wolforth in the bottom of the eighth to make it 6-5, but Wolforth was stranded at third base as the game ended.

In the second game, the Dragons led 2-1 after three innings before Great Lakes scored two in the fourth and one in the seventh to take a 4-2 lead. The Dragons again threatened, getting a one-out RBI double from Mat Nelson to pull to within a run at 4-3, but the game ended when Alex McGarry flied out to the warning track in deep right field.

The Dragons had 15 hits in the doubleheader and hit three home runs (solo shots by Allan Cerda and Justice Thompson in the first game, and Nelson in the second game), but they went a combined 2 for 21 with runners in scoring position while coming up one run short in both games.

Dayton’s most effective pitcher in the doubleheader was first game starter Evan Kravetz, who allowed just one hit and one run in four innings with one walk and five strikeouts. But the Dayton bullpen combined to give up six runs in seven innings in the two games.
