(Seguin) — The Pieper Lady Warriors took down the Seguin Lady Matadors on the volleyball court at Goldie Harris Gym on Tuesday night, sweeping the match in straight sets: 25-18, 29-27 and 25-18.
After Pieper took the first set, the teams battled in an extra long second set with the Lady Mats fighting off a number of set points but ultimately dropping the set. Seguin Head Coach Ashley Farris said the sequence was the difference in the match.
“In those close moments when it got deep in that game, 25-25, 26-26, we held it together mentally and then we just couldn’t close it out. That second set really hurt us leading into the third not gaining that momentum from that deep deep fight. That took a lot out of both teams going that deep in the ballgame.”
The back and forth set featured a number of smashes from Seguin junior outside hitter Keighly Dailey that had the home crowd rocking. Dailey finished the match with a team high 14 kills. Sophomore Karina Lerma lead the Lady Mats with 17 assists. Farris said despite the loss, the team needs to stay confident.
“I’m all about learning in every moment whether it’s a loss or not. I think one thing that we can take away from this game is no matter if we have an injury here or if we get a little rattled, we’ve got to be able to overcome that and overcome the adversity and work together as a team to find a way to pull out a win. So, I think that’s what we’re gonna focus on taking away from tonight is just making sure we’re staying confident in one another and finding a way no matter what.”
The Lady Mats fell to 3-2 in district 26-5A play while Pieper improved to 2-2. Seguin will be on the road Friday night at Kerrville Tivy.
In other area volleyball action last night, the Navarro Lady Panthers and Marion Bulldogs picked up district road wins. The Lady Panthers took down Bandera while the Bulldogs defeated Great Hearts Monte Vista.
