Heating mats to maximize plant nursery yields

"Our company was founded in 2005 and, after a few years, it has combined know-how on textiles with electrical technology. From this combination was born a technical heating electro-textile, covered by international patents, which we have adapted to agricultural needs," said Lorenzo Comoglio, managing director of Cofilea, a company that made the leap to the production of heating mats for professional greenhouses and plant nurseries in 2014 as a result of the contribution of agronomists and professionals from the sector."

"Our heating fabric is used just like a heating element inside an EH-Powerground mat/material. The final product is composed of a thick, durable and waterproof PVC coating, the heating fabric, and a highly thermal-insulating and insulating layer that forms a single, perfectly waterproof, and electrically double-insulated material. The goal of this technology is to provide a radiant system for bedrock heating in greenhouses, ready to use and pre-wired, called 'Plug & Play.' It's equipped with heating mats, thermostats, and extension wires, sized according to the customer's needs," said Comoglio.

"Maintaining temperature control in greenhouses is essential. Our mats are ideal for seeds and cuttings and can be used in propagation or multiplication greenhouses, cultivation greenhouses, or even in drying greenhouses. What our customers value most is the accelerated germination, increased and earlier rooting, as well as the quality and health of the plants, which are compact and vigorous. The use of our systems results in reducing the length of the development period between sowing/transplanting and the plant for the attainment of a vendible condition. In addition, optimal temperature management, through the bedrock heating system, leads to an important reduction in energy costs for greenhouses, compared to other climate systems," said the manager.

"A very important aspect is related to the modularity and scalability of the installation, that is, the customer can start with the purchase of our systems for small areas and increase the heating area over time, containing the investment according to actual production/commercial needs. Another factor that surprises our customers is that quick and easy installation of our systems does not require an electrician nor a screwdriver."

Cofilea has developed, in addition to traditional controllers, advanced and intelligent control for its heating systems that meet the needs of modern, precision agriculture. In fact, up to 40 percent tax credit can be accessed on the price of heating and control systems that meet the criteria of Agriculture 4.0. These are EH-SMARTCONTROL and EH-SMARTAIR, tools that allow remote management and/or monitoring, via app or computer, of soil/substrate temperature, soil moisture, soil salinity, ambient climate, and brightness.
